Walter George Hick was called to Heaven on March 28, 2017, at the age of 83. Beloved husband of Dorothy (nee Meyer) for 59 years; loving father to Steven (Launa) of Denver, CO; Kenneth (LeAnn) of Omaha, NE; Karen Abeln (Tim) of St. Louis; Barbara Gahring (Scott) of Denver, CO; Douglas (Margaret) of Lee's Summit, MO; and Martin (Holly) of St. Louis. Walter is also survived by 15 grandchildren, one great-grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews; his sister, Ruth Ann Nolde of North Augusta, SC; and his brother, Robert (Cheryl) of Ballwin. Walter was preceded in death by his parents Otto and Marie; two brothers, Edward and William; and infant sister, Doris Rose. Walter was born in St. Louis and much of his early life was spent working in his father's bakery. After graduating from Lutheran Central in 1950, Walter attended the University of Missouri-Columbia, where he was in the ROTC program. He graduated in 1954 with a B.S.B.A and served two years in the U.S. Army as a 1st Lieutenant. He met Dorothy at a Walther League meeting, and they were married in December of 1957. He attended St. Louis University School of Law, earning a law degree in 1960. Walter began his work with the Internal Revenue Service in 1960 and retired as the Supervisory Estate Tax Attorney for the Missouri District in 1990. A man of strong faith and family, Walter was active at Christ Memorial Lutheran, with a particular love for evangelism. He spent almost his entire adult life involved with the Boy Scouts of America, including many years as Scoutmaster, five trips to Philmont Scout Ranch, and serving on the Eagle Scout Board of Review. Visitation will be from 3-8 p.m. on Sunday, April 2, at Ziegenhein Funeral Home, 4830 Lemay Ferry Road. The funeral service will be 10:00 a.m. on Monday, April 3, at Christ Memorial Lutheran Church, 5252 S. Lindbergh. Interment at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Christ Memorial Lutheran Church or The Apple of His Eye Mission Society.
