Susanne "Sweet Sue" Marie Winzen, nee Becker, passed away as she lived - with dignity- on Wednesday July 24, 2024, at the age of 93. Beloved wife for 69 years to the late Edward A. Winzen; devoted mother of Diane (the late Ed) May, Stephen "Steve" (Sheri) Winzen, Randall "Randy" (Cindy) Winzen, Richard "Rick" (Lori Paine) Winzen, the late Daniel "Dan", Winzen, and the late Theodore "Teddy" Winzen; treasured grandma of Ed, Brett, the late Tyler, Kevyn, Ryan, Casey, Leah, and Chris; blessed great-grandmother of 9 and 1 more on the way; treasured sister of the late Leena (Bob) Knauer and John (Peggy) Becker; and many other dear relatives and friends.
Sue, known to many as "Sweet Sue," was born in 1930 during the chilly Autumn season to parents the late Nikolas and the late Magdelen, nee Wanko, Becker. Throughout her life, Sue was known to be a practical, private, and dignified lady. She became an alumnus of Cleveland High School, a place where she made and kept many friends throughout her life, continuing to meet annually with other alumni until her final years. After graduating, Sue was married in 1949 to her husband, Edward, whom maintained that she was the love of his life until his passing in 2018. Sue was a wonderful mother who cared greatly for all of her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even for her children's friends. Her care and love for her family especially shone through after her son, the late Dan, was injured and Sue stepped into the role as his caregiver.
In her free time, Sue loved to visit sunny St. Pete Beach, Florida, or play BINGO, especially at the Palace Station in vibrant Las Vegas. In quieter moments, Sue enjoyed spending time in her garden or working on her yard, maintaining the beauty of her hard work. She also held a love for sweets, watching soccer, and, as many St. Louisans, the St. Louis Cardinals.
Sue's presence touched many people throughout her long and fulfilling life, and while she will be greatly missed by all who had the blessing of knowing her, may we be comforted with the knowledge that she held such fulfillment and is now at peace, reunited with her family and the Lord.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are appreciated to Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital in honor of Sue.
Sweet Sue's visitation will be held on Sunday July 28, 2024, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at John L. Ziegenhein & Sons South City Chapel, 7027 Gravois Ave. St. Louis, MO 63116. Her funeral will be held the following morning, July 29, at 10 a.m., also at the funeral home. She will be interred in Resurrection Cemetery at a later date, alongside her dear husband, the late Edward.
