Pauline Chamberlain

December 25, 1922 — February 15, 2012

Pat Chamberlain died February 3, 2012. Visitation will be from 1:00-2:00 pm and the celebration of life at 2:00 pm on Monday, February 6, at JOHN L. ZIEGENHEIN & SONS, 7027 Gravois Avenue, St. Louis (63116). Burial will follow at Mount Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Pat's memory to the First United Methodist Church of Herrin, Illinois; Zion United Methodist Church in South St. Louis County, Missouri; or Hickman Mills Community Christian Church in Kansas City, Missouri. Pat was born December 25, 1922, to Iva Lee Elders and Jesse Matheny in Herrin, Illinois. She and her older sister Dorothy Matheny Mercer and her younger brother LC Cavaness were taught to value God, the church, and family. Pat graduated from Herrin Township High School in 1940. After studying at Brown's Business College, she worked as a clerk in the Williamson County Relief Office. Upon moving to St. Louis, she worked at Carter Carburetor Corporation, where she met Ray Chamberlain. They were married on July 15, 1946. From their love, two children were born: Terry Chamberlain Diehl and Stephen Ray Chamberlain. As her children grew, Pat did market research for Edward G. Doody & Co. Later she worked, until retirement, as a secretary at the Missouri Institute of Psychiatry at the State Hospital. Throughout her years in St. Louis, Pat was always a leader at Christy Memorial United Methodist Church. She did volunteer work with children at Kingdom House. She enjoyed traveling not only to spend time with her grandchildren but also to learn in such faraway places as China, Israel, Egypt, Ireland, England, and Hawaii. Pat is survived by her daughter Terry and son-in-law Paul Diehl; her son Steve and daughter-in-law Kathy Chamberlain; her grandchildren Paul-John and Melissa Diehl; Zachary and Katie Diehl; Abbey Diehl and Zac McCallum; and Rhiannon Nicki Dooley; her great-grandchildren Amethyst Lehman and Carter Diehl; her sister Dorothy Mercer; her brother LC Cavaness; and her nieces and nephews. With her mischievous blue eyes, bright red lipstick, loving smile, giving hands, and keen wit, Pat will be greatly missed not only by her immediate family but also by her many other relatives and friends whom she loved dearly.
