Obituary For Mildred M. Horn
Mildred (Millie) M. Horn, 100 of St. Louis, MO., died on Monday, June 8, 2020 at DeGreff Hospice House at Mercy South Hospital. She will be remembered for her caring ways and her sparkly deep blue eyes.
She graduated from Moeller Beauty College and was a retired hairdresser and homemaker.
In her 100 years of life, Millie was a person of deep faith and an active member of Grace United Church of Christ, St. Louis from 1937 until her death. She served as a Church School teacher for many years, was a member of the Sequoia Women’s Circle until it became inactive, was an usher and liturgist for worship. She said: “I come in church empty on Sundays, and go out with something that I can use for the whole next week.”
Millie was also an active volunteer two days a week at the city location of Feed My People from 1989 until 2015, where she wore many hats, starting out in the Thrift Store, pricing items, sorting items that were donated, and working on the dock. She became a Store Supervisor every Tuesday and Thursday. It is estimated that Millie volunteered 11, 482 hours at Feed My People where she was remembered as one with a kind, gracious and warm heart.
She also enjoyed working in her yard, crocheting, doing needlework, cooking and baking, reading, and when she was younger, going fishing for crappie. She enjoyed dancing, going with her brother Vernon and his wife Lorraine for big band ballroom dancing in Decatur, Illinois and to dances held locally.
Millie was the daughter of John and Emma (Kohr) Gessler. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbur (Bill) Horn for 42 happy years, and her brother Vernon Gessler of Branson, MO. She also had a special relationship with her late Sister in law, Lorraine Gessler.
She is survived by her son Rev. Roger Horn of Arnold, MO; grandson Todd Horn (Lori) of Oakville, MO and granddaughter Rachael Lawson (Brian) of Navarre, Florida; and 7 great grandchildren. Millie was like an adopted mother to Diana Schollmeyer. She was also an Aunt, Great Aunt, and friend to many.
Visitation for Millie will be held on Monday, June 15, 2020 from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at John L. Ziegenhein & Sons Funeral Home, 7027 Gravois. Please be aware that visitation is limited to 10 persons at a time, and visitors are asked to please wear a face mask. The service to celebrate her life will be led by Rev. Dr. Carole Barner, pastor of Grace U.C.C. Due to the restriction of the COVID-19 virus, the funeral service and interment will be private for family members only.
