Louis "Lou" J. Sampel, Jr.

Louis Joseph Sampel Jr., 86, passed peacefully surrounded by his family on Monday, January 22, 2024. Lou was born on December 4, 1937 in Saint Louis, Missouri, the son of Louis and Theresa (Uhl) Sampel. He was the loving husband of Mary Sampel for 40 wonderful years. 

Louis shared three beautiful children with his first wife, Ruthann (Baehr) Sampel. He was the beloved father of Corinne Ackermann (Daniel Lambert), Susan (Thomas) Becker, Catherine (Robert) Goetz; dear brother of Donna (Paul) Terry; cherished grandfather to Gregory, Melissa, Amanda, Ryan and Laura; a wonderful great-grandfather to Miranda, Tyler, Dylan, Jonah, Ashton, Logan, Amelia, Luka, Archer, Eloise, Oliver, Louise, and Eleanor; and a great-great-grandfather to Emersyn and Larry. He was a treasured friend to many. 

Louis will be remembered by his lifetime of adventures. He proudly served in the U.S. Army as an Expert Infantryman and Jumpmaster. He went on to enjoy an esteemed career with General Mills. Louis loved cooking meals and spending time at the lake with his family and friends.  He enjoyed many hobbies in life including weight lifting, bicycling, fishing, hunting, and traveling. He was a dedicated sports fan who rarely missed a Cardinals, Chiefs or Mizzou game. Special thanks to Nicole Bailey, the Kessler family and the generous neighbors of Anniston Drive, Our Lady of Lourdes Parish and Mercy Hospice for their care and kindness during his final years. 

Visitation will be held at John L Ziegenhein & Sons South County Parlors on Sunday January 28, 2024 from 4:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Funeral services will be held at the Ziegenhein Chapel on Monday, January 29, 2024 at 11:00 am. Burial to follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the USO or Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Washington, MO.

We loved him and he will be dearly missed.
