CHAPMAN, JAMES W. on Thursday, May 28, 2009. Baptized into the Hope of Christ's Resurrection. Beloved husband of Mary A. Chapman (nee Seliga), dear father of Dr. James G. (Merriem) and Daniel G. (Lauren) Chapman; dear grandfather of Elsie, Mary Grace, Kenna, Gwennia, Mackie and Patrick Chapman; dear brother of Ruth Chapman, Margaret Hutchison and the late Mary Jane Byrne; dear brother-in-law, uncle, great-uncle and dear friend to many. Jim served in the Army Air Corps in WWII as a Bombardier/Navigator flying in the European Theater. He was awarded the 2nd highest combat decoration, the Silver Star, as well as the Purple Heart and other campaign awards. He was also honored with the Croix de Guerre from France. In 1945, after completing 44 combat missions, Jim was discharged as a 1st Lieutenant and began his career with Clark Oil Co. in Milwaukee. Jim was a loving husband of 54 years and a loving father and grandfather. He enjoyed time spent with family, and keeping up with all the details of his children and grandchildren's lives. Jim lived a long and healthy life partly due to his consistent fitness regimen, running as a young man and walking in his later years. He logged 4-5 miles per day almost until the end. He also enjoyed vegetable gardening and working out of doors. He was well known for his precious gifts of black walnuts that he spent hours collecting on his walks and shelling in his basement. Jim had a genuine interest in others and loved to engage family, friends, and strangers in conversation with an inquisitive style and an enthusiastic ear. He also demonstrated care for the community through his volunteer work at church fish frys and soup kitchens. Jim will be dearly missed by family and friends.
