Gerald William Schaeffer passed away in Fleming Island, FL on August 13, 2024 at the age of 87. He was born to Joseph and Marie, nee Hairer, Schaeffer of St. Louis, MO on April 22, 1937 while living in Washington, DC. He lived in the St. Louis area most of his life before retiring in Florida to be closer to grandchildren. He is survived by his wife Margaret (Phelan) Schaeffer and his children Michael Schaeffer, Stephen Schaeffer and Cathy Chambers, and 5 grandchildren, Andrew, Quinn and Brian Schaeffer, and Luke and Nathan Chambers.
After attending Christian Brothers College High School in St. Louis, he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Missouri at Rolla and later earned a Master of Business Administration from Saint Louis University. He reached the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 588th Battalion, before spending most of his professional career with Monsanto.
He spent his free time fishing, tracking investments in the stock market, researching family genealogy, coaching his kid’s sports teams, and following the various sporting pursuits of his grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be held on October 5, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Assumption Mattese Catholic Church, with burial service at Resurrection Cemetery to follow.
