George Roberts

February 14, 1921 — October 17, 2017

George J. Roberts, 96, passed away Tuesday October 17, 2017 at 9:00pm at Liberty Village Nursing Home in Maryville, IL. George will be remembered by friends and family as a congenial person always ready for good conversation and a joke a minute. He had an uncanny remembrance of movies, movie stars and songs. He served the first part of his life as a traveling auditor for the Missouri Pacific Railroad which later became the Union Pacific Railroad. He saved the railroads a lot of money by being very adept at locating cars that had been incorrectly numbered by a railroad yard clerk as the trains were passing by. He served proudly in the US Army Infantry 33rd Division and saw duty in France, Germany and the Bulge. He received a Purple Heart, five battle stars and a Bronze Star. He loved telling stories about WWII and was featured in a book written by his daughter-in-law, Cindy Roberts, entitled "America's Unsung Heroes." He is survived by his son Greg L. Roberts and his daughter-in-law Cindy Roberts of Chesterfield, MO; a niece, Nancy Roberts, and nephews Paul (Patty) Roberts & Bradley (Joy) Roberts. He was predeceased in 2005 by his wife of 52 years, Virginia Becker Roberts. Virginia and George travelled to many parts of the world. Originally from Oakville, Missouri George moved to Granite City in 2008 and later resided with his special friend Dorothy Kinney until the time of his death. George was a member of St. Peter Evangelical Church in Granite City where he enjoyed many friendships. Funeral service will be held 11:30am Monday Oct. 23 at JOHN L.
