Schrader, Gary A. on Saturday, July 6, 2013; beloved husband of Roberta M. Schrader (nee Uchtman); dear father of Lisa, Gary and Tracy; dear grandfather of 5, great-grandfather of 1; our dear brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend. Gary Schrader, a well-known clothing salesman in St. Louis, died Saturday (July 6, 2013) from complications of a staph infection contracted during a stay at a hospital, his family said. He was 73 and lived in south St. Louis County. Mr. Schrader was the longtime general manger of the Brooks Brothers store during the 1980s when it was situated downtown on Broadway. The upscale store catered to CEOs and other business executives. Mr. Schrader never forgot his encounter with the wife of a prominent executive. Standing in the middle of the store, she showed her displeasure when no one came to wait on her right away. "Is anyone going to help me," she yelled to no one in particular, "or do I have to call New York?" Mr. Schrader took that as a threat to contact his company's corporate headquarters from someone with ample clout. He came running. He later left Brooks Brothers to work for another traditional clothier, the Jos. A. Bank store in Creve Coeur. He retired two years ago. He grew up in Chillicothe, Ohio. He overcame polio as a teen and later colon cancer and diabetes. His diabetes cost him a big toe. During an operation at a hospital in February, he developed a staph infection and never recovered, said his wife, Roberta Schrader. Mr. Schrader was a clothing salesman his entire career. "He could look at any man and tell exactly what size that man wore," his wife recalled. Services: Visitation Tuesday 4-8 pm at JOHN L. ZIEGENHEIN & SONS South County 4830 Lemay Ferry Rd. If desired memorials to the Humane Society of Missouri.
