Eugene "Gene" L. Hensley

May 4, 1940 — June 3, 2024

With profound sadness we announce the passing of Eugene “Gene” L. Hensley, who left us on June 3, 2024. Born on May 4, 1940, Gene’s life was characterized by his unwavering dedication to family and friends.

Gene’s legacy lives on through his surviving family, his son Michael W. (Molly) Hensley, daughter Debra A. (Steve) Serot, grandsons Adam M. Hensley, Alex M. (Marlei) Hensley, Jeffrey A. (Kylie) Eschmann, Connor M. Eschmann, and great granddaughter, Penelope Jane Hensley. He was predeceased in death by his father the late Walter T. Hensley, his mother the late Dorothy M. Hensley, his sister the late JoAnn Long and his brother the late Richard Hensley.

Gene held his career as a St. Louis City Firefighter near and dear to his heart. He was known for his exceptional skills and bravery, always putting the well-being of others above his own. The memories of Gene will forever be intertwined with the camaraderie he shared with his fellow firefighters and the lifelong relationships he built with his friends. His big personality and great sense of humor lit up any room he entered, making him the life of the party and a leader in all the shenanigans.

Outside of his duties, he found much enjoyment in his hobbies and interests. Fishing and hunting were not just pastimes for him but a way of life that brought him closer to nature. Watching a good Cardinals baseball game always made his day. Additionally, Gene loved playing cards every chance he got with family, friends, and co-workers, showcasing his competitive spirit and love for socializing.

Among Gene’s proudest accomplishments were being a Scottish Rite Master Mason from Beacon 3 Lodge and a part of the American Legion, where he continued to serve others and uphold values he held dear.
