Donald W. Hornung, 92, passed away on Thursday, March 7, 2019. Dear Husband of Jeanette Y. Hornung (nee Yaeger) for almost 68 years, devoted father of Sally (Steve) Schwartz and Steve (Therese) Hornung. Loving grandfather of Shelly (Mark) Minnella, Stacy (Mark) Regna, Jonathan Hornung, Jennifer (AJ) Denzl, and Samantha Hornung. Dear great grandfather of Jaiden, Kaylin & Violet Minnella, and Rory & Ella Regna. An Eagle Scout and a graduate of Hancock High School, class of 1945. Honorably discharged from the United States Army in 1946. After attending classes at the Missouri School of Mines in Rolla, Missouri; he started his career as a drafter/designer at Stone and Webster followed by a 43-year career at Sverdrup and Parcel / Sverdrup Corporation, retiring in 1994. Preceded in death by his father John Hornung, Jr., mother Susan Hornung, step-mother Helen Hornung, and sister Elvera Frazee. He loved trains and model railroading, building much of his HO gauge layout from scratch; and building wooden toys for his grandkids. He spent a lot of his spare time fishing, canoeing, camping, gardening (both vegetables and flowers, including growing gladiolas for show), working in the yard, and volunteering at church. He always had his special tool box in his car for taking to church to work on whatever needed fixing. When asked what he liked most, he replied with spending time with family and getting hugs from all the kids. Don always took a walk at lunch when he worked in downtown St. Louis and he had an infectious smile that could always elicit a smile back. He was easily known as someone who could make anybody smile.
