Richard Mattias Andres (90) beloved husband and father entered in to rest on October 7, 2022 in the presence of his loving family. He was born in St. Louis, MO on June 24,1932 to the late Mathias and Eva, (nee Takatz) Andres. Richard is survived by his wife Catherine Andres (nee Reitz) of 65 years. He was the proud father to three children whom he loved unconditionally. Karen (Mark) Budd, Kathryn (Gerald) Molidor, and Richard (Linda) Andres. Loving grandfather to eleven grandchildren Matthew (Abby), Katie (Hans), Kristine (Lee), Mark (Erika), Michael, Gerry (Ashley), Sara (Ted), John (Sarah Beth), Lauren (Mark), Kyle (Samantha), Mitchell, and 28 great grandchildren. He was a cherished brother to the late Margaret Jay and Eva Schlueter.
After high school Richard joined the US Navy and served as a torpedo specialist on the USS Piedmont off the coast of Korea during the Korean War from 1950-1954. Returning home after his 4 year Navy commitment he attended Parks College of St. Louis University obtaining his BS Degree. He worked for Sverdrup & Parcel as a wind tunnel designer. He then worked for Parks College as an Associate Professor in Aeronautics while obtaining his Masters Degree in Aerospace Engineering and later, his PHD in Meteorology. He was a Professor at Parks College of St. Louis University, a premium engineering and aviation institution for over 40 years and was the Chairman of the Aerospace Department. He was a rated private pilot, a rated airframe and power plant mechanic (A&P), built his own aircraft the Evans Volksplane ll, loved building and flying remote control airplanes, active in Soaring, Ham Radio operator, woodworker, outdoorsman, sailor, speed skater, loved to travel the world and across the US, and was a devout Catholic serving as an usher at Assumption Catholic Church. He was also a fabulous mentor to generations of young adults.
A short visitation will be held on Monday, Oct. 17, 2022 from 8:30 a.m. - 9:30 a.m. at John L. Ziegenhein & Sons funeral home 4830 Lemay Ferry Rd, St. Louis, MO. The funeral Mass will follow at 10 a.m. at Assumption Catholic Church 4725 Mattis Rd. St. Louis, MO 63128. Burial will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Richard Andres can be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Alzheimers Foundation of America.
